Tax season doesn’t have to be stressful. A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, accurate return, and it often means a bigger refund or a smaller bill. Here’s a simple checklist to get you ready.
Gather your documents
Start a folder (physical or digital) and collect:
- Identification — a photo ID and Social Security numbers for you and your dependents
- Income — W-2s, 1099s, and any records of self-employment or side income
- Deductions and credits — mortgage interest, property taxes, charitable donations, medical expenses, and education costs
- Last year’s return — it helps us spot changes and carryovers
Know your important dates
Individual federal returns are generally due April 15. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day. Business deadlines vary by entity type, so check yours early.
When in doubt, ask
Not sure whether something counts as a deduction? Bring it anyway. It’s far easier for us to set aside a document you don’t need than to track down one you forgot.
